Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy point-of-lay chickens?

We know it's frustrating to read "point-of-lay" hens advertised and they're only 3-4 months old! There's probably a couple of months' wait there.

The Darwin & Rural Poultry Club occasionally has "sale days" where members sell excess stock. We only hold these days once or twice a year.

You're more likely to find point-of-lay hens by posting on the Facebook page 'NT Chicken Community Hub'.

How can I get rid of my unwanted roosters?

It's best to advertise on the Facebook page mentioned in the previous answer i.e. NT Chicken Community Hub. There are thousands of members in that group, so it's likely you'll find a new home. If you want the rooster kept as a pet, then say so, otherwise it will end up in the pot.

What chicken breeds are good in the tropics?

A number of breeds are good in the tropics e.g. Leghorn, Australian Langshan, Ancona are just a few. All of these breeds are good egg layers too.

Bantam breeds generally handle the heat and humidity well e.g. Belgian d'Uccle, Australorp, Rhode Island Red.

Large breed birds (e.g. Sussex, Orpington, Cochin, Brahma, Plymouth Rock) can handle tropical conditions if their yards and sheds are shady, but they may eat less and end up losing size as a result.
