January 2026 News​

​1. We have now had three successful annual club shows in Lakeview Hall, Freds Pass Reserve. That is our club's "home". Our 2026 show is on Saturday 4 July. Entry forms will be available at the Litchfield Show Poultry Pavilion or phone the Club Show Secretary Kelly Burnett 0456 846 591 in May.

2. An exciting venture with an experienced NSW breeder and exhibitor of Naked Neck and Sebright chickens commenced in September. Jann Eason offered to supply fertilised eggs of these breeds to interested members of the Darwin & Rural Poultry Club. Eleven members responded. Although hatch rates were poor, there are enough of both breeds to generate ongoing interest, exhibition and further breeding projects.

3. Jacquie Deveraux completed a major step towards becoming an accredited poultry judge, the first accredited poultry judge in the NT. She completed the written and practical components for a Softfeather qualification.

4. We continue to increase the number of new show cages. Recently Litchfield Council awarded a grant to our club to purchase new foldable tables, as well as cage fronts and wire to construct 20 new standard-size cages. This adds to the number of tables and show cages we own, as an initial  grant from Litchfield Council in 2023 was specifically to purchase new cage fronts to be able to construct new bantam cages.

5. Our Show Secretary, Kelly Burnett and her two daughters supported the Girraween Primary Field Day with a display of chicks and resources for students and staff.​

 

6. Our major regular income continues to be Bunnings BBQs. We held two in 2025.

​

7. The Darwin & Rural Poultry Club will coordinate the poultry pavilion at the new Litchfield Rural Show, Livingstone Reserve, in May 2026.
